Gokyo Lake Recovery
In December Ken Gracey, of Lake Tahoe, started a GoFundMe campaign asking for help to fund a trip to Nepal whereby we would recover two Nepalese boys. It’s been tough raising the required amount of $20,000. When we were nearing the time to call off the search, because of the lack of funds, Ken told the families of his progress. He said you could divide the $1880 and send it to the families or postpone the search to the fall and see if more funds would come in. Their reply was, “We would rather have our sons back!”.
That is when we reached out to one of our supporters. He made a generous donation, as well as reached out to his clients and raised $7600. Along with the GoFundMe, we know have $9480.
We’ve raised just enough that we are compelled to fully commit to the trip. We have booked tickets to leave May 7th. This will be the most challenging recovery for us because of the very remote location. It will take three days of air travel and five days of hiking to get to Gokyo Lake, which is at 16,000 feet of elevation. Hiking slow, to let our bodies acclimate, is most important.
The Incident
A school group, from one of the lower villages, was spending a hot summer day at Gokyo Lake, in Nepal. A lady, from an upper level of a small teahouse, was videoing five young boys playing along the very rocky shoreline. One of the boys lost his balance and ended up in water over his head. No one there knew how to swim. Right in front of the camera, his friends came to help and three of them lost there lives that day. Here is the link to the video. I warn you, do not click on it, if the sight of a drowning might bother you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUXJuPFZUdA
The problem is that we know that we are still short in covering all the anticipated expenses. We are asking for your help in covering the last few thousand dollars required to make this happen. We realize the victims may not be “local”, but their families need that closure as well.
We ask you to consider how much you could part with to help enable us to provide closure to a very small community with extremely limited resources. We have a video of the exact location where these boys drowned. We are extremely confident in our ability to quickly recover them if we can just get to Gokyo Lake!
